The Case of Alien Hand

Here’s just a warning for today’s post: If you’ve come here looking for depth and insight or an experience of mental and emotional transcendence, this post is not for you. Come back another day!

_____________________________________________________________
I had lunch with my friend, Amanda, last week and somehow we got onto the topic of handwriting. She confided in me her frustration as a child regarding her inability to write with her left hand. Hours and hours would pass as she attempted to teach her left hand to produce letters just as beautifully as her right. When she revealed this secret from her past, I was surprised, as I shared the same covert operation. We laughed at our childish obsession, since we are now adults and would never try to write our name or any small sentence with our unfavored digits. No, we are much too old for that…or are we?

I want you, yes you, to try an experiment. Find a shampoo bottle or water bottle or something that twists open. Now, if you are right handed, open it with your left; if you are left handed, open it with your right. Now, how did that make you feel? Awkward? Weak? Uncoordinated?

Amanda and I agreed upon the perfect name for the feeling in our lower left extremity: “Alien Hand”. Alien Hand can happen to anyone at any time; in any situation when you accidentally, or purposefully use your unequipped appendage: dealing cards, using utensils, bowling, etc… It knows no discrimination between right and left handed persons. As long as the person has another hand that is not as advanced as the favored hand.

QUICK! Pick up your phone and use the “wrong” hand to open up your text messages (for those with flip phones or a slide phone, open the phone). Congratulations on your

Alien Hand.

Now that everyone is aware of what Alien Hand is, we can focus on the future. Will there ever be a cure? Can anyone become ambidextrous or will all the non-ambi. people forever live with this celestial attachment?  Here is an open, judgment-free forum for the discussion of Alien Hand. (Not to be confused with Alien Hand Syndrome).

Dreaming and Thinking: it’s a hazardous combo

I apologize for not keeping up with this. I have been quite busy the past couple weeks. I’ve been busy with my new job as well as working part time at FirstLink. Between the two, I take up my “free time” with sleeping and more sleep. My apartment could really be up for nomination of most hazardous living spaces of the year award. I finally took some time this week to buy groceries and hang out with friends! (Friends? what are those?) It was nice to see some ex-co-workers for St. Patty’s day although I had to work in the morning. I guess sometimes seeing friends is worth being tired the next day.

I’ve been learning a lot at HERO (Healthcare Equipment Recycling Organization). Joyce, the executive director, went to a workshop/training done by a storyteller for marketing and development of organizations. One main point the speaker said was most organizations have enough donors, it’s developing those relationships to make small donors bigger donors and to make one time donors more consistent. I thought that was a really interesting point. I believe through use of different media (facebook, twitter, jumo, video, snail mail and e-mail, and even the old stand by phone call) making connections and creating relationships is becoming even easier today. The problem is taking the time to do it, using the right tools for the right people (is a retiree really going to open up their e-mail, click on the youtube link and watch it? – maybe they need a note or phone call).

Man, I’m sounding like my brother right now (talking about media stuff). Quite honestly, I never thought this would be something I would be good at (media stuff), but I’m finding I’m more interested in this niche within the not for profit organization I work for. Hopefully, I’ll continue to learn and find what I could do best in this field. I’m definitely not the media person my brother is, but maybe I could be a director of PR and organize people with different talents to collaborate and make the organization a success! Hey, I can dream.

That is all for now. Tonight I may hang out with friends again! We’ll see. Tomorrow…back to the grind (yes…on a Saturday).

Signing off.

Tigs and Carm: An Update from Fuzzy Central

I started my new job Wednesday and am having a lot of fun. I got sick again though (probably from my last two weeks at a preschool) and have been being a bum at home this weekend. (I started writing this post over the weekend…so I’m a little slow…) Since that’s pretty much all that’s new in my life, I thought I’d give a little update about “The Fuzzies” aka Tigger and Carmella (my cats).

Yes, I am only 22, but I have already started the first step in the process of becoming a cat lady. (Good thing I have a boyfriend…he’s probably the only one saving me from cat lady-hood…and that’s not some side street in the Bronx.) Quite some time ago, I wrote a post introducing you to the fuzzies. After the fire, they became extremely close (in the temporary apartment). When we moved back, Tigger realized that this was her domain and decided Carmella was no longer her best friend. They would argue about whose chair was whose…why Carm was getting in Tigger’s “bubble” and so on. After awhile, Tigs decided that Carm was no longer a threat and liked her again. A few months later, the two are best friends! Although they sometimes fight like sisters (“I’m so over you licking my forehead”- Tigs “No no…just one…more… spot….”-Carm “Get away from me!”- Tigs) They move on (or forget) and decide they like each other again after about 2 minutes.

Anyway, here’s some cute pictures.

Are you on cuteness overload or what? Once I find my charger for my camera (3/4 of these were from my phone…) I’ll have pictures of more things in my life. (Isn’t that how it always works…camera works…more pictures?) Well I hope everyone is doing well and having a good week. I got twitter to work for HERO but still can’t upload a picture for them. Eh…details.

P.S. Someone called HERO today and after I had answered her question, she asked me if I had a cold. I laughed and said I did. She said a prayer for me right then asking God to help me feel better. I was taken a back (aback one word?) but thought it was really cool. Not many people do that, but it was completely genuine. Thank you caller!
